THE HIGHLIGHT of Loch Fyne Sea Angling Club’s recent outing at Loch Etive was a young common skate caught by Ardrishaig’s Steven MacBrayne.

A member of Loch Fyne SAC, Steven was one of eight anglers taking part in the monthly boat competition when he hauled in a 10lb 9oz skate.

Not a record breaker by any means, but the first landed aboard the charter boat Laura Dawn II indicating there are common skate breeding in or around Loch Etive.

Despite the heavy rain and wintry conditions, fishing in general was good with six species including common skate, spurs, thorn back ray, pouting, whiting and dogfish boosting the scoresheet.

Fish tally came to 158 at the end of the day and the angler who accrued the most points was Scott Rankin, with 36 fish (123pts) closely followed by Willie Shaw, 35 fish (118 pts), and then Mike Thompson, 21 fish (80 pts).

CATCH: Steven MacBrayne with his 10lb 9oz skate.
