Flying start to Skye Accordion and Fiddle Club meeting
THE NOVEMBER meeting of the Skye Accordion and Fiddle Club got off to a flying start with local trio Ally ‘K’ MacPherson on accordion, John Cameron on keyboard and Donald John Campbell on drums.
With the audience warmed up the trio were followed by selections from fiddlers Wendy Riva and Julia Rudram. Frequent visitor Hamish MacDougall from Muir of Ord took to the stage with his two-row button box with accompaniment from Gemma Donald of Cupar on fiddle, John Cameron on keyboard and the versatile Ally ‘K’ MacPherson on drums for several great sets.
The audience was delighted to welcome back local fiddle tutor Laura Harrington, who had brought along three of her pupils. Kirsty Watt, Mairead Smith and Rhona Stewart are members of the fiddle group known as ‘Skye Strings’. It was back to accordion sets from John MacGilvary with John Cameron on keyboard and Donald John Campbell on drums. Another local fiddle tutor, Caerina Campbell was next to entertain, firstly with pupil Ellie MacPherson and then in a fabulous duet with Gemma Donald which went down a storm with the appreciative audience. The entire second half of the evening was devoted to a fabulous performance from the club’s special guests, the talented duo of Alan Small on accordion and Gemma Donald on fiddle. They launched into a wonderful varied programme of music played to the highest standard. Great arrangements throughout and not a sheet of music in sight. This brought the evening to a close with a traditional stramash involving local club players. A happy audience headed home, already looking forward to another great night of music at their December meeting when the guest band will be The Alan Gardiner Trio on Thursday December 3 in the usual venue of The Royal Hotel, Portree.
