Ewan turns on the style in Elgin
LOCHABER Phoenix boxer Ewan Easson from Inverlochy continued his fistic education last weekend when he boxed in Elgin against the hometown club’s Ian Reid.
The 14-year- old won the Scottish Novice championships last month so was keen to show any improvement since his championship winning run and didn’t disappoint, winning all three rounds and taking victory on a unanimous points decision.
Ewan showed his positive defence skills to good effect on Friday night and all three rounds were similar in that as much as possible he would take ring centre and as Reid charged forward the Lochaber Phoenix boxer would use clever footwork to create punching room and walk the Elgin youngster onto his shots thus doubling the power. At every opportunity Ewan launched his own attacks to ensure that they were not boxing at his opponent’s preferred rate or rhythm.
What became evident was that Ewan had learned to defend and attack using angles, very rarely moving in straight lines. Coupled with a good grasp of working the jab, keeping shape and alternating attacks between body and head, his skills are improving due to the experience of contests and hard work in the gym.
Ewan will compete in the Scottish Intermediate Championships at the end of January which is the next step up from the novice championships and the last step before being an open class boxer and capable of fighting any boxer in Scotland.
