THE ASSOCIATION of British Insurers is expecting the bill for Storm Desmond, which resulted in 200 tonnes of debris falling on to the A82, to reach a total of £ 520 million.

This comes as around 1,500 families throughout the UK had to seek alternative accommodation following extreme weather, which saw rainfall in some areas of Scotland reach 100 millimetres.

Earlier this month, as Storm Desmond was at the height of its chaos, a landslide disrupted traffic between Spean Bridge and Invergarry and a 15-mile stretch of the road had to be closed.

This forced motorists onto a diversion route that added up to an extra 46 miles to their journey.
