SNP dragging its feet over broadband

The Oban Times - - Letters -

Sir, Of course it’s an outrage that the Vodafone mast on Mull has failed again.

Last winter, as the local MP, I spent a great deal of time getting this mast repaired. I even arranged for Vodafone to be questioned in front of the Scottish Affairs Select Committee.

When questioned by myself at the hearing, Vodafone admitted its infrastructure is out of date, but said there was no point upgrading the infrastructure until the broadband infrastructure needed to transmit 4G signals is put in place.

They promised they would bring 4G mobile internet to the West Highlands and Islands once the Scottish Government has rolled out the necessary broadband infrastructure.

Responsibility for funding the necessary broadband infrastructure lies with the SNP Government. It has failed Argyll and Bute on this. We lag behind other similar rural and island areas such as Highland, Orkney and Shetland.

Vodafone is at fault, but so is the SNP Government. It must get a move on. Lives depend on it. Our MSPs have let us down. They should be on their feet in Holyrood demanding action.

Also at fault are our SNP MPs who have shut down the inquiry into this that I had set up.

Alan Reid, Liberal Democrat candidate for Argyll and Bute, Dunoon.
