Man killed in River Garry is named

A MAN who died af­ter fall­ing into a Lochaber river while ca­noe­ing on Hog­manay has been named.

Petrus Janse Van Rens­burg, from Buck­ing­hamshire, got into dif­fi­culty af­ter fall­ing out of the boat into the River Garry, near In­ver­garry, at around 12.30pm.

The 36-year- old was pulled down­stream and had to be air­lifted to Raig­more Hos­pi­tal in In­ver­ness by the Royal Navy Search and Res­cue.

His ca­noe­ing part­ner, an 18-year- old man, man­aged to guide him­self to shore. He was taken by am­bu­lance to Raig­more and was dis­charged the same day.
