Is­land to host slate fes­ti­val

THE AT­LANTIC Is­lands Cen­tre on Lu­ing will be buzzing this weekend as it holds its an­nual slate fes­ti­val.

Held over three days, the event will pro­vide a fas­ci­nat­ing insight into the is­land’s his­tory as a slate-pro­duc­ing lo­ca­tion.

It starts to­mor­row night (Fri­day) with a ta­pas night when vis­i­tors can tuck into Span­ish de­lights.

On Satur­day, there will be two slate mo­saic work­shops by artist and ge­ol­o­gist Du­gald MacInnes, the first from 10am un­til noon and the next from 1pm to 3pm.

At 4pm there will be an il­lus­trated talk on the rise and fall of the slate in­dus­try, fol­lowed later by a slate is­lands ceilidh.

Sun­day sees slate tiles dress­ing demon­stra­tion at noon and a slate sculp­ture competition at 1.15pm. There will also be a slate ex­hi­bi­tion in the At­lantic Is­lands Cen­tre through­out the month.
