Numbers up for Isle of Muck open day

VISITOR numbers were up at this year’s Isle of Muck open day, with more than 100 people travelling to the island on Sunday June 19.

The annual event gives visitors the chance to see all aspects of island life, with entertainment and local food on offer.

With a tiny population of around 30 people, it is one of the busiest days on the island and everyone gets involved.

Muck resident Lawrence MacEwen said: ‘Last year only 37 people came to the open day, so it was good to see more this year.’

Lawrence’s wife runs the island’s tearoom, where a variety of local food was served.

Mr MacEwen said: ‘A number of islanders work in the tearoom on the open day and make food for the day.’

As well as great food, there was an art exhibition in the community centre, where several pictures were bought by some of the visitors.

Muck Primary School also held an art exhibition, which showcased pupils’ art.

Mr MacEwen continued: ‘The school had a number of events on during the day. It has an area outside where pupils grow vegetables and the children enjoyed showing it to the visitors.

‘The school also has baby ducklings and people loved seeing them.’

Lawrence took part in the day when he took guests round the island on his trailer, telling them all about what it is like to live on the island.

Lawrence’s daughter and son-in-law run a shooting range, offering the chance to take part in some bird shooting.
