Some justice for Willie Lawrie’s fine music

The Oban Times - - Letters -

Sir, I was most interested to read Dr Lorn MacIntyre’s fine article about Pipe Major Willie Lawrie ( The Oban Times, July 7).

In both the Scots Guards Settings of Pipe Music Volume 1 and the Queen’s Own Highlanders Standard Settings of Pipe Music, The Battle of the Somme appears in the retreat marches section but is unattributed to any composer.

Some justice is done, however, to Pipe Major Lawrie in the Scots Guards Setting Volume 2, where no fewer than five tunes are included and attributed to him, including The 8th Argyll’s Farewell to the 116th Regiment de Ligne and Mrs H L MacDonald of Dunach.

C Stewart Winter, Shellachan, Kilchrenan.
