Late father’s gift makes wedding extra special
A FATHER who died just months before his daughter’s wedding was still ‘there in spirit’ on the big day – thanks to a special gift.
Mary Ellen Campbell, from Stronaba, married Piers, (known as Joe) Campbell in Roy Bridge last month. After the service, Mary Ellen presented her new husband with one of two crooks made by her father.
He had given the crooks to her years earlier and had told her this particular pair was special.
Mary Ellen said: ‘If you look at the crooks closely, you can see certain markings on both of them. I remember my dad giving them to me years before I was even thinking about getting married. He said they were unusual because they came from the same sheep – it would have been a blackfaced one – so he wanted me to have them and I was to give one to my husband.’
Sadly, Mr Campbell died in May, aged 86.
Mary Ellen added: ‘I wanted to have them with me because I wanted my dad to be with me on the day. He was there in spirit. Even though I had beautiful shoes on for the ceremony I took them off and put on my leather wellies after wards. I meant to change them but I got waylaid meeting everyone and they were comfy so that was me in my dress and wellies for the rest of the night.
‘My husband and his dad like to work with wood so there were handmade bowls on the tables. I loved it and I’m sure my dad would have done as well.’
