Learning and Teaching in Argyll

-

Argyll College UHI student Lyndsey Collins moved to Oban in 2014 with her partner Max to allow him to pursue his studies at the Scottish Association for Marine Sciences (SAMS UHI). Originally from Glasgow, Lyndsey’s parents met at a dance in the Corran Halls while on holiday in Oban some years ago, so they were delighted with her move to the West Coast. Soon after moving to the area, Lyndsey started volunteering at Dunbeg Primary School and although she had recently completed a BA in Journalism, she quickly realised that teaching was her true vocation. ‘’I initially thought I’d have to leave Oban and move back to Glasgow to undertake the Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), so when I learned that the course was available at Argyll College UHI I was delighted,’’ Lyndsey said.

‘‘Jen McFadyen in the admissions department at the college was so supportive and encouraging during the application process, giving me all the information I needed, and although my initial application was unsuccessful, the feedback I received was very positive and constructive, and this year I’ve been accepted on to the course. “I was told I needed more experience so this year I’ve completed the HNC Childhood Practice. Doing an HNC almost seemed like a backwards step for me, but the course was really hands- on and I continued my placement at Dunbeg Primary School where all the staff were really supportive. I’d love to return there during my PGDE placement blocks but I’m also looking forward to experiencing other schools in the area.’’ When asked about the benefit of studying in Argyll, Lyndsey said: ‘’Obviously the beauty of the area, but also the fact that everyone at Argyll College has been so kind and supportive – everyone in the centre knew my name within just a few days. Clare Campbell, my HNC tutor, made studying here such a positive experience: she was inspirational!’’ ‘’I did apply elsewhere for the PGDE but didn’t get the same feeling of support, so UHI was definitely my first choice. Studying with Argyll College UHI has been an amazing experience overall – I’m really looking forward to completing my post- graduate qualification here. ’’ To find out more about Early Education courses at Argyll College UHI contact your local centre or go online to www.argyllcollege.ac.uk
