Angus takes top piper title
BENDERLOCH piper Angus MacColl has been crowned Overall Masters Champion at Glasgow’s Piping Live! festival.
Mr MacColl, a crofter and piping tutor at Oban High School, was competing against the best pipers of this generation at the annual Masters Solo Piping Competition in the National Piping Centre on Monday.
Mr MacColl, a four times winner of the Glenfiddich Championships, came second in both the piobaireachd and the march, Strathspey and reel categories, following Finlay Johnston and Pipe Major Gordon Walker respectively.
Afterwards, the gold medallist of the Argyllshire Gathering and Northern Meeting was named overall winner of the Masters Solo Piping Competition.
Mr MacColl now qualifies for the 43rd Glenfiddich Solo Piping Championship at Blair Castle on October 29.
He was last year’s overall winner, as well as in 1995, 2006 and 2010.
Now in its 13th year, Piping Live! runs until August 14.
