Lorne lose out in Dundee
Harris Academy 17 Oban Lorne 7 Pre- season fixture
OBAN Lorne made the long trip to Dundee on Saturday to take on Caledonia Division 1 side Harris Academy RFC.
The Green Machine were joined on the journey by 2xv players from Argyll and Bute RFC who were taking on another Dundee side, Panmure RFC, with that game also being held at Harris Academy’s Elliot Road ground.
An impressive squad of 34 players travelled on the day despite several key players missing due to injury and work commitments.
Unfortunately Oban Lorne failed to build on the previous weekends home win against Garioch RFC as they went down 17-7 against a well organised and forwards dominated home team.
Oban were left frustrated they could not make the game more of a contest as they squandered several opportunities to score while pressurising the home tryline. On six occasions the men in Green failed to score from a five metre lineout against a stubborn defence. Coach Corrie Louw will be looking to sharpen up his teams attacking options ahead of the start of the team’s West Division 1 opener in two weeks time.
Tommy Sutherland scored Oban’s only try of the day from close range, with the conversion coming from Scrum Half Finlay Carmichael.
Despite the loss Oban are in a confident mood looking ahead to the new season. With key players such as Craig Wright, Corrie Louw, Lorne MacLachlan, Struan Smith, Cammy Smith, Dave McCabe and Dom Ma all missing in the weekend’s loss these players will be a welcome addition back to the squad over the coming weeks.
The Oban side are back in pre-season action this Saturday when they make another long journey to take on North Berwick RFC. North Berwick finished second in East Division 1 last season and will be looking for another strong campaign under the command of head coach and former Scotland captain Jason White. White is assisted in his role at the club by fellow former Scotland International Nathan Hines who is also part of Scottish Rugby’s National team coaching staff.
The first league fixture for Oban Lorne will be on Saturday August 27 at home to East Kilbride, KO 3pm at Glencruitten.

Panmure 45 Argyll and Bute 7
Argyll and Bute RFC joined Oban Lorne in their trip to Dundee on Saturday to take on Caledonia Division 2 side Panmure RFC, who are based in Broughty Ferry.
Despite a good first half showing Argyll eventually went down 45-7 in what was a valuable 80 minutes for the players involved.
Argyll and Bute kick off the 2016/17 season away to Glasgow East RFC on Saturday 27thof August.
