South Lochaber Thistle get off to a winning start
United Glasgow 1 South Lochaber Thistle 2 West of Scotland League
SOUTH Lochaber Thistle marked their first ever com- petitive game with a 2-1 victory over United Glasgow at Glasgow Green last Saturday.
The team, started by Alan ‘Spud’ Gray and Daniel Mackintosh just three months ago looked organised and energised for their inaugural season.
They started the game brighter and any early nerves were put to bed on 14 minutes when Daniel Mackintosh set up Dave Forbes, who from fully 30 yards struck the ball into the top left hand corern of the net.
Thistle continued to dominate the game with Ewan Maclean and Lewis Morrison both causing the United Glasgow full backs no end of problems with their movement and direct running.
Going in at half time 1- 0 to the good, Thistle changed to a 4- 4-2 formation for the second half which lead to an even more dominant performance with both Daniel Mackintosh and Paul McFatridge unlucky not to extend their lead.
A great diagonal ball from Dave Forbes was received by man of the match Ewan Maclean whom from 20 yards on the angle cheekily chipped the outrushing keeper to make it 2- 0 to Thistle. As the game came down to the final 10 minutes a goal line clearance from Kieran Lopez and a crucial tackle by Alan Gray kept the opposition at bay. However an 88th minute own goal meant no clean sheet for the new team but that wasn’t enough to dampen their spirits as they emerged with all three points. After the game manager Alan Gray was proud of his boys saying: ‘Being that we didn’t exist three months ago, to get to our first game is amazing, all the hard work on and off the park has all been worthwhile and hopefully we can kick on from here and continue to improve as the season continues.’
Thistle’s next game is on Wednesday August 24 when they travel to take on Helensburgh.
Starting line up v United Glasgow: Hunter, K Lopez ( Hancar 90), Gray, Rodger (capt), Duncan, S Lopez ( Wilson 70), Mackintosh, Forbes, Morrison, Maclean, McFatridge ( Tot 60).
