Parsley the cat’s celebrity status ensures he still has the upper paw

The Oban Times - - News -

AFTER his rise to fame through the pages of The Oban Times, Parsley the cat is ‘just as adventurous as ever’ according to his owner Fiona Campbell-Smith, writes Naimh Adams McGilp.

Last week saw the cat’s fame increase with an appearance on STV news last Friday.

Parsley has also been in various newspapers and magazines since

The Oban Times revealed the feline’s ambitions for stardom earlier in the year.

Parsley was just eight months old when he went on his first adventure and as any cat-owner would be, Fiona was desperate to find him. The first time he went missing she panicked and reported it to the town’s vets. She later found out he had been all the way up to the viewing tower on Pulpit Hill.

Now aged two the cheeky chap has been spotted all over Oban and made quite a name for himself locally, and internationally.

After being asked how Parsley is coping with his celebrity status, Ms Campbell-Smith said: ‘He’s exhausted, he’s sleeping an awful lot. He’s been quite good recently, not staying out too late – ever since his TV appearance he’s calmed down a little bit. I don’t think it’ll be for long, though.’

Parsley usually covers between five and six kilometres a day, which means he is on a special high- calorie diet because of the amount of energy he’s using up. Last Sunday he only covered two an a half kilometres, which Fiona said was a ‘quiet day for him.’

However, Fiona thinks he’s becoming more adventurous.

She said: ‘He’s growing in confidence, he now knows exactly where he’s going. It’s amazing.

‘I used to think he wasn’t that bright, but he really is. He knows the whole town.’

One of Parsley’s main routes is through Jacob’s Ladder, where he tackles all 144 steps.

Now that Parsley is well-known, people are pleased to see him when he’s out and about. However, Fiona worries that he’s less safe now as a celebrity cat than he was before as people are now less concerned about him being in places he shouldn’t be.

Parsley receives many messages everyday from fans using their cats as online aliases in order to communicate with him.

Fiona thinks it’s lovely that people with busy lives have a little time and love to spare for Parsley.

When asked if the fame has gone to his head, Fiona replied: ‘Parsley was famous even before he was famous.

‘In his head, he’s always been the best cat in the world.’

In their house, Fiona says she and Parsley are equals, but she does admit that ‘maybe he has the upper paw’.

Ready for his close up…Parsley makes a visit to Dawn McBay in St Saviour’s beauty salon, a mere 1.5 cat miles from his home.
