Fighter jets boom out over Lochaber
PEOPLE out and about in Fort William last Friday afternoon thought bonfire night had come early after a ‘huge explosion’ was reported.
The bang, which was ‘heard and felt’ particularly between Spean Bridge and Onich but also in the town centre, was fighter jets breaking the sound barrier as they responded to reports of an unresponsive aircraft.
A spokesperson for the Royal Air Force said: ‘Quick reaction alert Typhoon aircraft were launched from RAF Coningsby and RAF Lossiemouth to identify an unresponsive civilian aircraft.
‘ The Typhoon aircraft were authorised to transit at supersonic speed for operational reasons.
‘Any inconvenience caused to local residents is regretted.
‘Communications were re- established and the aircraft was safely escorted by the Lossiemouth aircraft to Prestwick airport.’
