Number of jobless increases
THE NUMBER of people claiming unemployment benefit in Oban in October shows a one per cent increase over the corresponding month last year.
The number of young people aged 18 to 24 claiming benefits also rose, by three per cent, over the same time last year.
However, a spokesman for the Department for Work and Pensions was quick to point out that the unemployment rate has plummeted over the past six years.
Billy Walker said the jobless rate in that period fell by 51 per cent for all age groups and by 61 per cent for those aged 18 to 24.
The overall claimant count for October 2015 is 820, down from 1,669 in 2010, and 170 for those aged 18 to 24, down from 435 six years ago.
