Num­ber of job­less in­creases

THE NUM­BER of peo­ple claim­ing unemployment ben­e­fit in Oban in Oc­to­ber shows a one per cent in­crease over the cor­re­spond­ing month last year.

The num­ber of young peo­ple aged 18 to 24 claim­ing ben­e­fits also rose, by three per cent, over the same time last year.

How­ever, a spokesman for the Depart­ment for Work and Pen­sions was quick to point out that the unemployment rate has plum­meted over the past six years.

Billy Walker said the job­less rate in that pe­riod fell by 51 per cent for all age groups and by 61 per cent for those aged 18 to 24.

The over­all claimant count for Oc­to­ber 2015 is 820, down from 1,669 in 2010, and 170 for those aged 18 to 24, down from 435 six years ago.
