Delivering news to where you are
The Oban Times officially launches its new website this week, bringing you local news online seven days a week
Users can subscribe for as little as 56p per week and as well as seven- day access to up-to- date news via the website, they also have access to a digital version of the newspaper on a Thursday. The site is suitable for mobile and tablet use, too.
Keith McIntyre, group operations director for owners Wyvex Media Group, explained: ‘ We recognise that we need to offer the people of Argyll & Bute and Lochaber a choice in how they consume their news, so we decided to completely overhaul our site and improve access to local news.’
He added: ‘ The new online service offers amazing value – 56p for full access to local daily news on the website plus a digital edition every week. The weekly printed paper alone costs 85p and is available every Thursday.’
The Oban Times team, led by editor Susan Windram, decided that the time was right to completely overhaul the way news was delivered to the local community.
Susan said: ‘ We are delighted that readers no longer have to wait until Thursday for their local news. Our journalists are excited that they can now deliver their news stories immediately to online subscribers. Meanwhile, content such as breaking news, traffic news and weather disruption will not be behind a paywall. The whole process has been a lot of hard work, but we believe it will be more than worth it.’
The website was built with the assistance of publishers DC Thomson, and Keith added: ‘ Working with DC Thomson has been a great collaborative experience. Like Wyvex, they are a family run business – albeit much larger – and really understood what we were trying to achieve.’
The website launch is being supported by an extensive social media marketing campaign based on the hashtag #OT7DAYS, as well as in-paper and radio campaigns.
Trainee journalist at The Oban Times, David McPhee (left), is the star of the campaign’s short 50second film where he explains, using hand-written white boards, what #OT7DAYS is all about.
For several weeks, the hashtag has been promoted without any explanation until today, February 23.
