Dalmally golfers pay tribute to much-loved club stalwart
MEMBERS of Dalmally Golf Club and guests remembered a long-time and much-loved club stalwart at a special season opening event.
Thirty-five players took to the course to play in a competition dedicated to the memory of former greenkeeper and club treasurer John MacKechnie, who sadly and unexpectedly died on Boxing Day.
John, who tended the greens and cared for the course for many years, would have been proud of the splendid condition of the course, prepared for the event by his successor, Angus MacGillivray, and club volunteers.
Lush greens and finely cut fairways welcomed the competitors, who enjoyed a stableford pairs competition in John’s name, followed by lunch in the clubhouse and a fitting tribute.
Past-captain Billy McKay marked the commitment John gave to the club over a long number of years, reminding members and guests of his kindness, generosity and willingness to help in all matters, never knocking anyone back when a job needed done, whether behind the bar, tending to the course or carrying out repairs.
Ladies captain Ann Colthart added her gratitude for all John had done over the years for the ladies section. Ann noted how John had always been there when needed, with nothing ever too much trouble, even down to cleaning the clubhouse after a long day’s golfing.
John will be remembered not just for the work he immersed himself in on the course and around the clubhouse, but also as a fine player, having hit his first ball in earnest during the club’s inaugural year in 1987 and then going on to win many trophies.
After the lunch and tributes, John’s son and fellow golfer Graeme presented the John MacKechnie Quaich to the winners on the day, Dalmally members June Sutherland and John McClelland.
A splendid photograph of John was then presented to the club by the MacKechnie family. The photograph, in remembrance of a great friend of the club, will rightly assume pride of place in the clubhouse.
