LEWS CAS­TLE in Stornoway made it through to the fi­nal of the Great Bri­tish Build­ings Restora­tion of the Year in the Vic­to­rian cat­e­gory, fea­tur­ing on the Chan­nel 4 pro­gramme af­ter im­press­ing judges with its Gothic-style restora­tion.

The cas­tle fell into dis­re­pair af­ter sit­ting empty for decades, un­til Comhairle nan Eilean Siar led a £19.5 mil­lion re­gen­er­a­tion project.

Travel and leisure com­pany Nat­u­ral Re­treats has played a sig­nif­i­cant role in the project through a part­ner­ship with the comhairle.

The coun­cil re­ceived fi­nan­cial sup­port from the Na­tional Lot­tery, His­toric En­vi­ron­ment Scot­land, High­lands and Is­lands En­ter­prise the Scot­tish Gov­ern­ment, Euro­pean Re­gional De­vel­op­ment Fund and Bord na Gaidhlig.
