Failed policy on travelling community

The Oban Times - - Letters -

Sir, Councils are being urged to work together to deal with unauthorised traveller sites following new Scottish Government guidance. What a cheek! It was Alex Salmond who instructed the police not to get involved and leave it to local authorities and land- owners.

This meant that those affected had to take legal action.

The travellers eventually moved on, leaving piles of filth which had to be cleared away at considerable cost.

Until there are harsh penalties, the travelling community will continue to set up camp wherever they like.

Stopping welfare benefits would be a start.

Only with such pressure will the travellers then use the specially provided council facilities paid for by the taxpayer.

This decades-long problem is another Scottish Government failure – not the councils. Clark Cross, 138 Springfield Road, Linlithgow.
