Nine-day digital detox reaps big reward for youngsters

The Oban Times - - News -

PUPILS at Ballachulish Primary School have earned four iPads for their classroom after taking part in a digital detox.

Primary six and seven children were challenged to spend nine days without mobile phones, tablets and laptops by head teacher Carol Divers and class teacher Jenni Wright.

Each pupil signed a contract agreeing to abstain from any devices, even texting. As part of the project, the children completed a daily diary which contained pictures and stories of them spending more time outside playing, fishing, cycling and actually calling round for friends in person. Many of the children also noted how much more time they spent talking with family and friends. Ms Divers said the response from parents about the digital detox was ‘positive’.

She said: ' This was a positive task and there was definitely a marked difference in the playground.

‘Friendships seem to have grown stronger. Some of the children have said they are happy to be back on their devices but will cut back a little in future.’

The children were extremely pleased to receive their new classroom iPads.
