Suc­cess for Dochie MacKen­zie com­pe­ti­tion

A TEN­NIS tour­na­ment took place on Sun­day in mem­ory of Dochie MacKen­zie, a for­mer ten­nis and squash player.

Some 18 play­ers com­peted in the dou­bles tour­na­ment, with Bob McCul­loch and Gra­ham Alexan­der, who was re­placed by Ron Cordeiro in the fi­nal, win­ning the me­mo­rial tro­phy.

They beat Andy Gra­ham and Mal­colm Croarkin in the fi­nal.

Lynda Ox­land, chair­woman of Oban Ten­nis and Squash Club, said: ‘[ Dochie MacKen­zie] was a squash player and he joined the ten­nis club and thor­oughly en­joyed it.

‘He died last year, so we de­cided be­cause he was well liked and was al­ways laugh­ing and jok­ing we would have a me­mo­rial tour­na­ment – we had 18 peo­ple. Ev­ery­one re­ally en­joyed it; it was a lovely af­ter­noon.

‘The cup is be­ing shared. We are go­ing to have a squash tour­na­ment as well, in ei­ther Oc­to­ber or Novem­ber.’

The club also had an open day on Satur­day and more than 50 peo­ple of all ages at­tended.

And to cater for this surge in play­ers, Lynda added: ‘We have seven new vol­un­teer coaches be­ing trained next weekend.’

All of the play­ers who took part in the Dochie MacKen­zie Me­mo­rial Cup on Sun­day.
