Skye Ac­cor­dion and Fid­dle Club meet­ing

IS­LAND musicians are get­ting ready for this year’s Isle of Skye Ac­cor­dion and Fid­dle Fes­ti­val.

The week­end event kicks off on Thurs­day May 25 at 7.30pm in the Royal Ho­tel, Portree.

The fes­ti­val at­tracts a host of musicians and friends from the length and breadth of the coun­try each year.

The club re­cently held its May meet­ing at the Royal Ho­tel. Younger play­ers came to the fore and an evening of great mu­sic be­gan when MC Jim Campbell in­vited Emily Mathe­son on stage with her ac­cor­dion to play sev­eral sets which in­cluded a beau­ti­ful ren­di­tion of Hec­tor The Hero and Miss Rowan Davis.

Later in the evening Emily was joined on stage by El­lie MacPher­son with her ac­cor­dion in place of her usual fid­dle for great ac­cor­dion duets backed on drums by Don­ald John Campbell who was mak­ing a wel­come re­turn to the club.

Emily was fol­lowed on stage by young ac­cor­dion­ist Erin Baker, ac­com­pa­nied on guitar by her fa­ther, Ge­orge. The au­di­ence was de­lighted to be en­ter­tained by vis­i­tor Alan Smith of La­nark who played sets on a bor­rowed ac­cor­dion backed by guest band mem­ber Jac­qui Mac­Don­ald of In­ver­ness and Don­ald John on drums.

Guest band of the night was the Caith­ness-based El­iz­a­beth MacKen­zie band with El­iz­a­beth on ac­cor­dion, Iain Mac­Don­ald on fid­dle and Jac­qui Mac­Don­ald on pi­ano.

The band served up a su­perb pro­gramme for the ap­pre­cia­tive au­di­ence in­clud­ing a fid­dle solo from Iain and an ac­cor­dion solo from El­iz­a­beth to com­plete a night of fine mu­sic on the club’s fi­nal night of its 2016/17 sea­son.
