Skye Accordion and Fiddle Club meeting
ISLAND musicians are getting ready for this year’s Isle of Skye Accordion and Fiddle Festival.
The weekend event kicks off on Thursday May 25 at 7.30pm in the Royal Hotel, Portree.
The festival attracts a host of musicians and friends from the length and breadth of the country each year.
The club recently held its May meeting at the Royal Hotel. Younger players came to the fore and an evening of great music began when MC Jim Campbell invited Emily Matheson on stage with her accordion to play several sets which included a beautiful rendition of Hector The Hero and Miss Rowan Davis.
Later in the evening Emily was joined on stage by Ellie MacPherson with her accordion in place of her usual fiddle for great accordion duets backed on drums by Donald John Campbell who was making a welcome return to the club.
Emily was followed on stage by young accordionist Erin Baker, accompanied on guitar by her father, George. The audience was delighted to be entertained by visitor Alan Smith of Lanark who played sets on a borrowed accordion backed by guest band member Jacqui MacDonald of Inverness and Donald John on drums.
Guest band of the night was the Caithness-based Elizabeth MacKenzie band with Elizabeth on accordion, Iain MacDonald on fiddle and Jacqui MacDonald on piano.
The band served up a superb programme for the appreciative audience including a fiddle solo from Iain and an accordion solo from Elizabeth to complete a night of fine music on the club’s final night of its 2016/17 season.
