Wel­come funding for Glen­coe Boat Club

GLEN­COE Boat Club has re­ceived a £7,500 cash boost from the Royal Yacht As­so­ci­a­tion (RYA) and Sports Scot­land Awards for All which will see the birth of a new youth train­ing pro­gramme.

The club held its Push the Boat out day at the week­end when 250 peo­ple turned out to take part in a wa­ter sports rang­ing from ca­noe­ing to row­ing yachts and rib boats. Speak­ing to the Lochaber

Times, vice- com­modore, Nigel Tozer, said: ‘ The money will al­low us to cre­ate a youth train­ing pro­gramme within the club to try and en­cour­age more young peo­ple to join.

‘A num­ber of our ju­nior meme­bers are now grown up and mar­ried, and be­ing part of the club has also led them to a ca­reers in the ma­rine in­dus­try.’

With the money, Mr Tozer said the club is go­ing to hire a in­struc­tor for youth train­ing, pur­chase more equip­ment such as bouy aids, wet­suits, and two new safety boats.

‘We want to have some­one who can come once a week and run a course for six to eight weeks, at night or at the week­end,’ said Mr Tozer.

Over the win­ter club mem­bers were busy up­grad­ing the pon­toon, mak­ing it ‘user friendly’ and they were pleased to un­veil it at the event.

Mr Tozer said: ‘Ev­ery­one loved the look of our im­proved pon­toon and it has been in use the past cou­ple of days which shows its in good work­ing or­der.’
