Welcome funding for Glencoe Boat Club
GLENCOE Boat Club has received a £7,500 cash boost from the Royal Yacht Association (RYA) and Sports Scotland Awards for All which will see the birth of a new youth training programme.
The club held its Push the Boat out day at the weekend when 250 people turned out to take part in a water sports ranging from canoeing to rowing yachts and rib boats. Speaking to the Lochaber
Times, vice- commodore, Nigel Tozer, said: ‘ The money will allow us to create a youth training programme within the club to try and encourage more young people to join.
‘A number of our junior memebers are now grown up and married, and being part of the club has also led them to a careers in the marine industry.’
With the money, Mr Tozer said the club is going to hire a instructor for youth training, purchase more equipment such as bouy aids, wetsuits, and two new safety boats.
‘We want to have someone who can come once a week and run a course for six to eight weeks, at night or at the weekend,’ said Mr Tozer.
Over the winter club members were busy upgrading the pontoon, making it ‘user friendly’ and they were pleased to unveil it at the event.
Mr Tozer said: ‘Everyone loved the look of our improved pontoon and it has been in use the past couple of days which shows its in good working order.’
