Glenfinnan landfire disrupts train service for hours

The Oban Times - - NEWS -

PASSENGERS travelling by train between Mallaig and Glasgow last Friday faced major disruption following land fires.

The blaze broke out around 11am on May 12 and spread across 50 acres between Glenfinnan and Lochluichart.

Services on this section of the West Highland Line were cancelled while firefighters attended the scene and replacement bus services were running from Mallaig to Fort William.

Emergency services have been busy in recent weeks as dry and windy weather have caused several similar incidents around Lochaber.

Scottish Fire and Rescue Services have asked people to be extra vigilant when camping outdoors and there have been calls from locals to not light fires in these conditions.

Early reports suggested Friday’s fire could have ignited by a spark from the steam train.

The line re- opened around 5pm on Friday evening.
