25 years of Oban Music Society
FOR 25 years, Oban Music Society has been bringing classical chamber music to Oban, enabling the resident population and visitors to enjoy live performances of real quality from local and international players.
The society is celebrating this anniversary with the installation of a replacement Steinway grand piano which will make full use of the excellent acoustics in St John’s Cathedral. Concerts are held in the church once a month on Sunday afternoons between October and March.
The new instrument will be showcased in a special performance on September 9 with a piano recital by Peter Evans.
Peter is based in Scotland but has an international career as a performer, conductor and teacher. He has made more than 80 broadcasts for the BBC and many recordings and this will be a wonderful opportunity to hear the new piano put through its paces.
While this season has a full and varied programme of instrumentalists and styles, we want to make the most of our new acquisition, so the new piano will be on show again in November when Sasa Donaldson will play Mozart, Bach and Chopin.
In April, the society welcomes Clare Hammond, the young pianist described by the Daily Telegraph as a pianist of ‘amazing power and panache’.
She also played the piano in the film of The Lady in the Van, in the part of the younger version of Miss Shepherd, otherwise played by Maggie Smith.
Later in the season, in response to the popularity of previous jazz performances, the society will welcome the Colin Steel Jazz Quintet.
In this anniversary year, the annual Mendelssohn on Mull Festival has appointed the talented Doric String Quartet, acclaimed as possibly the UK’s leading young chamber group, as artistic directors of the festival for the next four years.
This unique festival, which our society supports, is expanding its role in bringing musical opportunities to young local people.
The Doric Quartet will be paying a preliminary visit to the area in which they will give a concert at the Cathedral on Sunday October 1.
But before that, Oban Music Society will host this year’s Mendelssohn on Mull annual concert in Oban at the Cathedral on Sunday July 2.
Details of concert programmes and dates are available on the society’s website at www.obanmusicsociety.org along with membership details.
All concerts start at 3pm at St John’s Cathedral, George Street, Oban, unless otherwise stated and tickets are available at the door, with special prices for members. Students and children have free admission.
