THE testing of a floating tidal energy platform will take place in Connel during September and October of this year.

Sustainable Marine Energy Limited, a company based in Edinburgh, with an office in Orkney, is a developer of tidal renewable energy platforms and anchoring solutions.

John McGlynn, Orkney project manager, hosted two public information events in the Connel Village Hall on Tuesday May 31.

The presentations demonstrated how the platform operates and what it looks like above and below the water. A buoyant platform that will be taut-moored to the seabed using a unique anchoring solution overcomes the installation and maintenance costs involved with the usual approach of building units similar to wind turbines and planting them in the seabed. The proposed site for the platform is to the south- east of Connel airport.

Local residents and stakeholders had an opportunity to register any comments or concerns at the event and later on at the Connel Community Council meeting.
