Careless driver banned and fined
UNFORTUNATELY for a 40-year- old driver from Kirkintilloch, a police car was among the vehicles which had to brake suddenly when an overtaking manoeuvre went wrong.
Craig David Fyfe, of 5 Mitchell Gardens, admitted driving carelessly when he appeared before Sheriff Eilidh MacDonald at Fort William Sheriff Court last week.
The court heard he had misjudged an overtaking move on the long, straight stretch when heading south on the A82 by St John’s Church near Ballachulilsh and had to cut in front sharply before the sweeping left-hand bend. This caused an on- coming HGV to take evasive action.
‘The driver had to brake, causing the lorry wheels to lock up,’ said procurator fiscal Martina Eastwood. ‘The vehicles behind the HGV, including a marked police car, had to brake suddenly.’
His defence agent Hamish Melrose said Fyfe had been following a number of slow-moving vehicles heading south before the incident occurred.
Fyfe was fined £ 320 and lost his driving licence for five months under the totting-up procedure, given the number of points on his licence.
