West High­land Ten­nis Cham­pi­onships get un­der way on Fri­day

THE WEST High­land Ten­nis Week will get into full swing this week­end at At­lantis Leisure, with more than 50 com­peti­tors tak­ing part.

Play­ers from Amer­ica, Eng­land and Scot­land will com­pete, with the win­ner be­ing de­cided on Sun­day.

How­ever, the star of the tour­na­ment could well be a ten­nis shirt.

A Rodger Fed­erer signed ten­nis top will be raf­fled this week, with the pro­ceeds go­ing to the DMI Can­cer Trust and the West High­land Ten­nis Week.

Mary McLean, who will be ref­er­ee­ing the tour­na­ment, said: ‘Stu­art Fraser, a for­mer ten­nis club mem­ber and ten­nis jour­nal­ist, was in­ter­view­ing Rodger Fed­erer and men­tioned the DMI char­ity.

‘So Rodger Fed­erer has given a signed shirt.’

Raf­fle tick­ets can be pur­chased from At­lantis Leisure, Coast­ers and the Sport Shop, with the win­ner be­ing an­nounced on Sun­day.

‘We are hop­ing to get a good re­sponse from peo­ple,’ Mary added. ‘We have been lucky to get that and we are very ex­cited about it.’

The tour­na­ment will com­mence on Fri­day at 9am, with games be­ing played un­til 9pm.

It will be a sim­i­lar set up on Satur­day, and the fi­nals on Sun­day are sched­uled for 1pm.

The lo­cal events got un­der way last Sun­day, with Gre­gor Bry­don win­ning the Ar­gyll Cup sin­gles event and Kenny Drum­mond and Melissa Oatts were the dou­bles win­ners.

Sin­gles fi­nal­ists Kenny Drum­mond and Gre­gor Bry­don. Gre­gor won the fi­nal 6-2.

Dou­bles fi­nal­ists: Eoghan Swan and a Tris­tan Carr were beaten in the fi­nal by Kenny Drum­mond and Melissa Oatts.

The signed Rodger Fed­erer shirt that has been do­nated to the DMI Can­cer Trust raf­fle.
