Lochaber and District Motorcycle Club members get ready for the world series
LOCHABER and District Motorcycle Club youngsters are gearing up for a weekend at the GP Trials World Series.
Fourteen-year- old Ben Dignan will be racing in the world series this Saturday, July 8, in Yorkshire.
He will be competing alongside fellow club member Duncan MacColl, 17.
Ben, who lives near Roy Bridge, has been riding since he was four years old.
He has previously competed in both Scottish and British Championships, and this is the first year he was eligible to ride at a world status.
Oban youngster Euan Sim also competed at the British level, finishing a respectable third, second and third in his three rounds. Both Ben and Euan lead their respective Scottish championship classes.
Chairman of Lochaber and District MCC David Dignan said: ‘Both boys put in a strong performance over the three laps in hot conditions and were pleased to come away with a third place. It’s a tremendous achievement.’
Now Lochaber High School pupil Ben is getting ready for the world competition. Dad David told the Lochaber Times: ‘Ben has been part of the trail scene his whole life. He has grown up and knows the people riding in the world championships, and to ride with these guys is just a dream come true.
‘Ben tends to ride above his level in Scottish competitions, by about four years, and then competes at his own level in British ones.
‘He also recently took part in a time and observation trail, Mintex, in Yorkshire, which is an out and out race, where he came eighth. It was a huge achievement for him because he was the youngest of the age group allowed to compete in the event.’
Ben is coached by world champion Jack Price, who trains with him all year round, while he tries to balance school, riding and swimming – another passion of his which helps him train.
Lochaber and District MCC bosts more children in the club than all of the others in Scotland put together. To find out more head to their website.
