Oban basks in warm summer sunshine
THANK goodness the sun has come out at last and let’s hope it stays a wee while, writes Bid4Oban town ambassador Kay MacDonald.
What a difference it makes to events and there is so much going on this summer. I know on the West Coast you just have to be prepared for anything but a dry day is a plus and a warm, sunny day is an added bonus.
Let’s hope for some sun with a nice wee breeze for all the sailors arriving for West Highland Yachting Week, especially as it celebrate its 70th anniversary this year. I hope they get to enjoy the new pontoons and us landlubbers get to enjoy the spectacle of all the yachts setting off.
We also have another Bid4Oban local market on Saturday, which I think adds to the holiday atmosphere in the town - that and watching everyone sitting outside the cafes and restaurants enjoying the views and the wonderful wee buskers that have been entertaining us. It gives the town a lovely buzz.
I also like the sound of the Magic Fairy Fun at Waterstone’s this Saturday but I think it may be aimed at children. I might have to pop by, though, with my wings and wand in my bag.
The impressive sounding Mendelssohn on Mull String Ensemble are going to be performing in St John’s Cathedral on Sunday, which would be a wonderful musical way to end a summer weekend.
It’s really not hard to find something to entertain you just now. I know I’m determined to squeeze every last drop of enjoyment I can out of this summer and so far it’s not been too difficult.
If you’re struggling, don’t forget to have a look at Oban town diary online and, if you have something you want to advertise, you can do it the same way.
Not forgetting our new picture frame on George Street. Have you spotted it yet? It’s not just for visitors wanting holiday photos – it can frame the beautiful views not to mention the boats of all shapes and sizes but it does look good with people in it too and don’t forget to share your photos with the hashtag #LoveOban.
Now to a different sort of photo. Did you spot where last week’s photo came from? The doorway to Argyll Mansions next to WH Smith. And this week’s is one you probably see on a daily basis, but are you paying attention?
