Oban digs deep for Fishermen’s Mission

The Oban Times - - DISTRICTS -

THE OBAN fishing fleet is much smaller than it used to be but it still has a huge place in the heart of the town.

People were overwhelmingly kind when the Fishermen’s Mission held a Fish Friday collection in the town’s Tesco store on July 7, raising £296.

The mission thanks everyone for their generosity and the staff at the store for supporting the event.

Older people were reminiscing about the days of the mission on the south pier and the Sunday night socials for a singalong, cups of tea and a good blether.

One woman remembered: ‘We used to go down to the shore at midnight to watch all the fishing boats sail out. They would not fish on the Sabbath and it was a splendid sight to see them all set sail.’

There may not be a mission building in the town but the mission’s work still continues, supporting fishermen at work, or retired, and their families.
