Pre-season friendly called off

The Oban Times - - Times Sport -

LAST Saturday’s pre-season friendly match between Oban Saints and South Lochaber Thistle was called off on the Friday evening when the Lochaber side phoned to say they could not raise a team which was unfortunate as it was too late for Saints to organise another fixture. The Oban side played Lochgilphead Red Star last night (Wednesday) in a pre-season match at Glencruitten.

This weekend Saints take part in the annual Argyll and Bute Cup tournament held in Lochgilphead.

The competition has two sections of four teams with the top two qualifying for the semi-finals. Group A – Lochgilphead Red Star, Tarbert, Glasgow Islay and South Lochaber Thistle. Group B – Dunoon, Oban Saints, Neilston and Tannahill.

The competition gets under way at 10am at Lochgilphead Joint Campus 3G pitch and the Ropework Park.

The following Saturday (August 12) Saints start their SAFL Premier Division programme with a tough away game against Hillington followed by a home match against Motherwell Thistle.

Manager Alex Craik said: We’ve lost several players from last season due to retiral and leaving the area. We are also carrying a few injuries, but hopefully they will clear up quickly and we can get a strong squad together for another assault on the Scottish Cup and the SAFL premier league title.

Saints manager Alex Craik.
