Lifeboat races to diver stricken with bends

OBAN RNLI lifeboat launched on the morn­ing of Friday July 28, to help a diver sus­pected of suf­fer­ing from the ‘ bends’ in the Sound of Mull.

Oban’s lifeboat, the Mora Edith MacDon­ald was re­quested to launch at 10.55am on Friday by the Coast­guard in Stornoway to evac­u­ate a diver who was sus­pected of suf­fer­ing from de­com­pres­sion sick­ness, also known as the ‘bends’, fol­low­ing a rapid as­cent while div­ing on a wreck in the Sound of Mull. Once on scene the diver was trans­ferred on board the lifeboat, by 11.30am.

The vol­un­teer crew then made their best speed pos­si­ble back to Oban, fol­low­ing which the ca­su­alty was trans­ferred on to a wait­ing am­bu­lance for fur­ther as­sis­tance.

Oban lifeboat then re­turned to sta­tion where she was re­fu­elled and made ready for ser­vice again by 12.20pm.
