Skye race vol­un­teers thanked

FOL­LOW­ING a record-break­ing year for the Isle of Skye Half Marathon, lead spon­sors The Scot­tish Salmon Com­pany (SSC) joined event or­gan­is­ers on Wed­nes­day July 12 to present cheques to com­mu­nity groups who vol­un­teered their time and sup­port for the race.

A to­tal of 741 run­ners com­pleted the 13.1 mile race on Satur­day June 10, mak­ing it the big­gest turnout in the event’s 33-year his­tory. Com­mu­nity groups were re­warded for their ef­forts in en­sur­ing the smooth run­ning of this year’s half marathon at the Portree Ho­tel.

Cheques to­talling £2,400 were dis­trib­uted and Ewen Ma­clean, Se­nior Ma­rine Sites Man­ager at SSC, was on hand to con­grat­u­late rep­re­sen­ta­tives from each or­gan­i­sa­tion and help Alis­tair Dan­ter, chair­man of Skye Events, present the do­na­tions. Or­gan­i­sa­tions who re­ceived do­na­tions for their vol­un­teer­ing ef­forts in­cluded Isle of Skye Pipe Band, the lo­cal Brown­ies, Guides, Beavers and Cubs, Skye Ro­tary Club, DAES dance group, Skye Dance, Skye Gym­nas­tic Group, Skye Ca­manachd (shinty), Skye and Lochalsh Foot­ball As­so­ci­a­tion and Skye Strings Band.

Craig An­der­son, chief ex­ec­u­tive of The Scot­tish Salmon Com­pany, said: ‘A big thank you to ev­ery­one who gave their time and played such an im­por­tant part in this year’s event. We are very proud to spon­sor the Isle of Skye Half Marathon.’

Mark Crowe, Isle of Skye Half Marathon race direc­tor, said: ‘The ded­i­ca­tion shown by lo­cal helpers is very much ap­pre­ci­ated and th­ese do­na­tions are a fit­ting re­ward for their hard work.’
