Oban angler Iona lands third whopper in a row
Oban’s Iona Campbell celebrated a triple monster catch this year – landing three giant fish each weighing more than 100lbs. And she has the photographs to prove it, posing here with dad Ronnie and skipper Alan and a 128lb blue shark. The 26-year-old caught the blue shark and a 100lb porbeagle off Wales in July, and then a 152lb skate off Kerrera last month, before releasing the monsters back into the seas to fight another day. ‘It is just pot luck if they bite on your line,’ the Oban dispensing optician said. ‘I did not think I would be able to handle a porbeagle. They are a lot more fiery on the end of the line. They run circles around the boat, and they will give you a nasty bite. They are absolute brutes. Shark is easier than skate, which you are fishing through 450ft of water. They bury themselves flat, like a suction pad. Bringing it up is knackering. It took at least half an hour.’ Iona landed her biggest catch, a 174lb skate, aged just 14 while fishing off Mull, and has been hooked since.
