ENGLAND 2 BRAZIL 1

6 FEBRUARY 2013, FRIENDLY WEMBLEY

The Observer - Sport - - SPORT FOOTBALL -

A rare England victory over Brazil – only the fourth in 24 contests and the first since 1990, when Gary Lineker’s header earned a 1-0 win at Wembley. Jack Wilshere stars in Roy Hodgson’s midfield, Theo Walcott excels in flashes and Wayne Rooney scores his 33rd international goal before Frank Lampard produces a fine volleyed winner. Wilshere also concedes a penalty for blocking a Ronaldinho cross with his hand but England are indebted to Joe Hart, who saves the Brazilian’s spot-kick and follow-up. Hart cannot, however, prevent Fred from lashing in a left-foot drive with Gary Cahill caught out of position and Chris Smalling, on debut as Rio Ferdinand looks on from the stands, fails to close him down.
