The former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton’s record of 1,249 competitive club appearances has finally been broken – by a 47-year-old from Leamington Spa. Wisbech Town’s Paul Bastock equalled the record in the United Counties League Premier Division last week, and broke it yesterday, appearing in their 4-1 FA Vase win over Thetford Town. “I never reached the heights I wanted to in football,” he told the BBC. “But this is something I never dreamed of.”
