Soylent Green Syfy, 11pm (Richard Fleischer, 1973) What “soylent green” turns out to be is these days as well known as the answer to the “Rosebud” riddle in Citizen Kane, but if you don’t know… This is one of the first eco-themed science fiction movies, based on Harry Harrison’s novel Make Room! Make Room! Starring Charlton Heston, Peyton Place alumna Leigh Taylor-Young and Edward G Robinson, it’s set in 2022, in a wildly overcrowded US, where one solution to overpopulation is to feed the masses on the latest product from the Soylent Corporation. With the plot revolving around Heston’s NYPD cop as he investigates a wealthy man’s murder, the urban dystopia plus the corporate thriller element carry distinct foretastes of Blade Runner – except that this movie’s future world is grubby, gritty and decidedly undreamlike.
