The Observer - The New Review - - THURSDAY 16 - Stephanie Billen

As part of the Being Human festival celebrating humanities research across UK universities, Matthew Sweet begins a stimulating journey in Canterbury, where things become psychogeographical as two writers, the unknown author of the Old English poem Andreas and Russell Hoban, help him see the city in very different ways. In Transport for London’s lost property office he meets Kate Smith, a historian fascinated by how we have tried to control material loss through the ages, and in Portsmouth’s supposedly haunted Wymering Manor he discusses the “archaeology of absence” with academic Karen Fielder.
