Pixar picks a winner as Hollywood joins the real world

The Observer - - Comment & Analysis - Domee Shi

Congratulations to Domee Shi, whose short Pixar film Bao received its first teaser trailer last week. The Chinese-Canadian Shi is not only the first female director of a short film for Pixar, but the animation company’s first female Asian director, too. As is Pixar tradition, Bao will be shown before The Incredibles 2 on its release in June. Bao tells the story of a lonely Chinese woman who is given a second chance at motherhood when a cute dumpling comes to life and it looks as adorable as it sounds.

The promise of more female and non-white directors is always a treat and Bao is another sign that Hollywood is creaking into the modern age. Shi’s mother was a consultant on the film, advising on its dumpling-making moments.

Domee Shi has made a short film about a cute dumpling.
