Rome mayor cleared of ly­ing about job

An Ital­ian judge yes­ter­day ac­quit­ted Rome’s mayor Vir­ginia Raggi of false tes­ti­mony in a trial over a se­nior job ap­point­ment at City Hall, avert­ing a cri­sis in her party, the rul­ing Five Star move­ment. Raggi’s elec­tion as mayor in 2016 was seen at the time as a ma­jor break­through for the party, which has promised to clean up the cor­rup­tion-riddled Ital­ian cap­i­tal.
