A memorable memoir

The Oldie - - READERS' LETTERS -

SIR: It may interest Dr Detlev Piltz (‘My Vicarage Lessons with a Four-yearOld Theresa May’, September issue) that Church Enstone is familiar to anyone who read a memorable memoir of a farm labourer who spent his life there.

He was Mont Abbott, and the book was Lifting the Latch. Mont didn’t write it but was interviewed over two years, and the tape recordings were edited by Sheila Stewart, with his broad Oxfordshire accent effectively reproduced.

Theresa May and her parents are not mentioned in the narrative, and I wonder whether their paths ever crossed. John Saumarez Smith, Canonbury, London N1.
