Witch hunt hell is over

A SOL­DIER who was in­ves­ti­gated by the Iraq His­toric Abuse Team af­ter be­ing falsely ac­cused of war crimes said its clo­sure was “long over­due good news”.

Sgt Brian Wood said the al­le­ga­tions against him and other forces per­son­nel – such as un­law­ful killing and mis­treat­ment of pris­on­ers – “just did not hap­pen”.

Sgt Wood, of 1st Princess of Wales’s Royal Reg­i­ment, warned the Gov­ern­ment had “big lessons to learn” from the fail­ure of IHAT.

Its clo­sure was an­nounced on Fri­day af­ter Phil Shiner, a lawyer in charge of many of the abuse cases, was struck off.
