EASTENDERS legend June Brown has vowed never to retire from acting, admitting her work is what “keeps me alive”.

The star, famed for playing chain- smoking Dot Cotton in the BBC soap, turns 90 on Thursday.

But she tells Kirsty Young on Desert Island Discs today: “I can be feeling like death warmed up when I come i n, shoulders drooping. Then I’m alive. It keeps me alive.

“I think that’s why many people get ill and lonely when t hey’re older. Loneliness and having no motivation, nothing to work towards, kills you.”

Among June’s choice of songs for the Radio 4 show is Cliff Richard’s 1959 hit Living Doll.

And she jokes that her luxury on the island would be “a packet of tobacco seeds” so she can smoke.
