Call to ban gay haters

THE BBC has been blasted for shortlisting boxer Tyson Fury for Sports Personality of Year even after his sick homophobic remarks.

The inclusion prompted MPs to probe gay hate in sport and urge a two-year stadium ban on all cuplrits.

The Culture Media and Sport Committee wants sports bodies to have zero tolerance of any homophobic behaviour and create a “safe climate” for gay athletes to come out.

Committee chairman Damian Collins said: “Homophobic abuse in sports grounds is just as i ntolerable as racist behaviour and should be dealt with as severely.”

The MPs welcomed rugby union’s two-year ban of two fans for gay abuse of referee Nigel Owens.

But they said including Tyson in the 2015 contest was “symptomatic of homophobia not being taken seriously enough in sport.”
