Fury at tots asy­lum axe

A 50,000-NAME pe­ti­tion was handed to No10 yes­ter­day urg­ing Theresa May to re­think scrap­ping a scheme to bring child refugees to Bri­tain.

It was de­liv­ered by Labour’s Lord Dubs, 84, a wartime child refugee from the Nazis in Cze­choslo­vakia.

Bri­tain is tak­ing only 350 child r efugees af­ter orig­i­nally plan­ning to bring in 3,000 lone young­sters.

Lord Dubs had won the pledge to take 3,000 by adding an amend­ment to the Im­mi­gra­tion Act last year.

Arch­bishop of Can­ter­bury the Most Rev Justin Welby said he was “sad­dened and shocked” by the scheme be­ing axed.

Home Sec­re­tary Am­ber Rudd said she feared that the scheme was pro­vid­ing op­por­tu­ni­ties for gangs of peo­ple traf­fick­ers.
