A CHI­NESE sol­dier stuck in In­dia for 54 years has fi­nally re­turned home.

Wang Qi, 77, was held in Jan­uary 1963 af­ter stray­ing over the In­dian bor­der.

He spent six years in jail be­fore be­ing re­leased. But with­out doc­u­ments al­low­ing him to leave In­dia he set­tled in Mad­hya Pradesh in 1969 – and stayed there.

Wang mar­ried in 1975 and had three chil­dren be­fore diplo­mats were alerted and is­sued a pass­port. His son Vishnu, 35, said: “Life has been dif­fi­cult for him.”

Wang and Vishnu flew from Delhi to Bei­jing and were yes­ter­day head­ing to his home city of Xianyang.

His wife stayed in In­dia and it is not known if she will join Wang later.
