IMELDA Staunton’s high-octane performance as the acerbic Martha dazzles in this exceptional new production of Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize winning play.
The bones of her bitter and frustrated marriage to inept professor George (Conleth Hill) are laid bare when she invites handsome young Nick (Luke Treadaway) and his wife Honey (Imogen Poots) back for a drunken nightcap. Under James MacDonald’s skillful direction, the stage fizzes with sexual energy between both the older couple and their young companions.
Three hours of lacerating marital scorn at London’s Harold Pinter Theatre may be an exhausting prospect but this amazing production is undoubtedly redemptive with its humorous dialogue lifting the play to lifeaffirming levels. Runs until May 27.
